PHOENIX, Ariz. (June 27, 2019): Bank of America has awarded the Human Services Campus (HSC) a $15,000 grant to advance economic mobility for individuals and families and put them on a path to financial stability.
HSC, a 501c3 nonprofit agency, owns and operates a 13-acre campus at 12th Avenue and Madison that is home to 20 nonprofit organizations providing services and resources to people experiencing homelessness. Services include mental, physical and dental health, shelter, employment, legal services and housing.
Between 800 and 1,000 individuals experiencing homelessness visit the Human Services Campus each day.
“Our collective goal at the Human Services Campus is to provide safety and supports to guide every person to permanent housing,” said HSC Executive Director Amy Schwabenlender. “Of the nearly 7,000 unduplicated homeless individuals who visited the Brian Garcia Welcome Center at the Human Services Campus this past year, more than half initiated a strategy to achieve self-sufficiency. This very generous grant from Bank of America will enable us to reach even more men and women experiencing homelessness with vital services and support.”
The Human Services Campus was among 39 Valley nonprofits receiving grants from Bank of America.
“As the homeless population in the Valley continues to rise, despite the strong economy, many of us are just one life event away from needing to depend on basic
needs services such as emergency shelters or behavioral health resources, and it takes
a network of nonprofit, public and private sector partners to help chip away at the complexities that comes with homelessness,” said Benito Almanza, Arizona market president, Bank of America. “But when we can work together, it goes a long way towards getting people back on the path to financial stability.”
Approximately 30 percent of HSC clients are women and one-third are over 50 years old. In 2018, 6,434 unduplicated individuals sought services at HSC. According to the 2019 Maricopa Regional Continuum of Care Annual Point-in-Time Count, 6,614 people experienced homelessness on a single night. Nearly 1,000 were identified as chronically homeless.
Since 2005, thousands of men and women have received shelter services at the Human Services Campus and moved to transitional or permanent housing.
